MASAHIRO MAKI GALLERY is pleased to announce its participation in artKYOTO 2019, the first international art fair to be held at the World Heritage Site, Nijo Castle. Our booth will be located in the “Daidokoro (kitchen) of Nijo Castle”, which used to be called the ‘onryori no ma’ (cooking room) during the Edo period and is usually not open to visitors. There, in a space where the weight of history can be felt, we will present eleven surf paintings by the American artist, Michael Kagan. We invite you to take this opportunity to view this series of works by Kagan that depict – with bold brushstrokes – the dynamism of ocean waves around the world, in surroundings where even after four-hundred-years, the magnificence of Japanese culture continues to live and breathe.
