Installation view, artwork: Jennifer Rochlin, Photo: Naohiro Utagawa
Rochlin depicts celebrities, pop cultural motifs and decorative patterns on irregular, ceramic vessels (pots). The themes she has been engaged with most recently include the flora and fauna of California, personal narratives and art historical references. Her pots exude an inimitable charm, stemming from the combination of their irregular forms, in which the traces of the artist’s hand are evident, and the various motifs that have been depicted as if in response to those forms. When we view each individual work in turn, we see that their colors speak of the artist’s vibrant artistic sensibilities and we find in their shapes and motifs, an organic, instinctive, intimate quality, as if the artist’s hands were still placed on them.
This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Japan and her works will be installed in such a way as to enable visitors to take their time and view her newest pieces from various angles. We hope you will take this opportunity to experience the ‘stories’ the artist has depicted.
