MAKI Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Tokyo Gendai, the first international contemporary art fair to launch in the Tokyo area in three decades. For the inaugural edition of the fair, the gallery will present five emerging contemporary artists from Japan and abroad: Susumu Kamijo, Shiori Tono, Tamura Satoru, Anthony Miler, and Takuro Tamura.

Susumu Kamijo (b. 1975 in Nagano, Japan) explores the abstraction of familiar imagery through continuous experimentation with color and shape. His singular muse since 2014—the poodle—has gone through numerous iterations over the years, its distinct form pared down to the most essential and symbolic elements. Shiori Tono (b. 1994 in Oita, Japan) confronts the fragility and elusiveness of memory by taking fragments of her past—often referencing old childhood photos or home videos—and reconstructing them on the painted plane. Tamura Satoru (b. 1972 in Tochigi, Japan) creates kinetic works that employ electricity in whimsically useless ways, subtly poking fun at contemporary society’s obsession with productivity while also subverting the viewer’s expectations of what art should “mean.” Anthony Miler (b. 1982 in Toledo, Ohio) uses a combination of precisely controlled lines and gestural marks to construct quietly poignant compositions which reflect the candid nature of his artistic approach. Takuro Tamura (b. 1989 in Osaka, Japan) exercises his keen observational skills, technical mastery, and playful sense of humor to explore the irony that pervades the relationship between nature and humankind.
We look forward to seeing you at Booth D09.
